Diabetes

Prof Tina Vilsboll

University of Copenhagen, Denmark

She is a Director, Center for Diabetes Research, Gentofte Hospital, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. She has been working on GLP 1 since 1997 and in 2004 she defended her doctoral thesis on the effect of GLP-1 and GIP in the pathophysiology of diabetes. She is also the head of Diabetes Research Division continuing the work on the incretin hormones and diabetes mellitus.

Prof Richard Holt

University of Southampton, UK

He is Professor in Diabetes and Endocrinology within Medicine at the University of Southampton. His current research interests are broadly focused around clinical diabetes and endocrinology. These encompass studies of the relationship between mental illness on diabetes and the psychosocial aspects of diabetes.

Prof Miles Fisher

Glasgow Royal Infirmary, UK

He is a Consultant Physician and Diabetologist at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, UK and Honorary Professor, University of Glasgow. He has interests in diabetes and the heart, hypoglycaemia, and new treatments for diabetes.

Prof Paul Armstrong

University of Alberta, Canada

He is University Professor, Department of Medicine (Cardiology) at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and Director of the Canadian VIGOUR Centre.

Prof Lars Ryden

Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden

Lars Rydén is Professor Emeritus of Cardiology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. He is a specialist in internal medicine and cardiology. His research focuses on arrhythmias, cardiac pacing, heart failure and cardiovascular disease related to diabetes.

Prof Bryan Williams

University College London, UK

He is Chair of Medicine at University College London and Director of the University College London Hospitals National Institutes for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre. He is also the Director of Research for UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is a Consultant Physician at UCL Hospitals and a NIHR Senior Investigator. His research and clinical practice is in the field of hypertension in which he is recognised as one of the world's leading authorities. His research in the sphere of human experimental medicine focusses on developing clinically applicable models for the human non-invasive assessment of aortic pressure and haemodynamics.

Prof Neil Poulter

Imperial College London, UK

He is Professor of Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine, Imperial College London. He is currently a Member of the Executive Board and President Elect of the International Society of Hypertension. He has played a senior role in the design management and conduct of several major trials including ASCOT and ADVANCE.

Prof Keith Fox

University College London, UK

He is Professor of Cardiology of the University of Edinburgh. His major research interests are in the mechanisms and manifestations of acute coronary arterial disease and his work extends from underlying biological mechanisms to in vivo study and clinical trials.

Prof Martin Cowie

Imperial College London, UK

He is Professor of Cardiology and is an Honorary  Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, UK. His major clinical and research interests are in health technology assessment and the delivery of efficient and effective care for patients with heart failure, with a particular focus on new technologies: diagnostics, drugs or devices.

Prof Fausto Pinto

University of Lisbon, Portugal

He is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. He is also the Head of the Cardiology Department and of the Heart and Vascular Department of Santa Maria University Hospital.His main areas of interest are ischemic heart disease, anticoagulation, cardiovascular imaging, particularly on the use of ultrasound in cardiology and pioneered the use of intravascular ultrasound in the study of graft atherosclerosis.
